Block “S” Dinner Honors Spellman Athletes
The dedication of all the athletes and their coaches and moderators was acknowledged by Father Trevor Nicholls, President of Cardinal Spellman High School. Dr. McCarthy, Principal of Cardinal Spellman High School, reminded students that Spellman stands for excellence in academics and sports. Ms. Morris, Athletic Director, praised athletes and coaches for their strong sense of commitment.
The evening included the induction into the Spellman Hall of Fame of Anne Gevlin and Paul Piliero. During her twenty-nine years at Spellman, Ms. Gevlin, former Assistant Principal, was a constant presence at every type of sporting event. Mr. Piliero, a former physical education teacher and track coach, devoted twenty-two years to Cardinal Spellman High School.
The night featured the presentation of the Schiazza “S” award. This plaque is given to the students who have received eight or more varsity letters. This award is named for Salvatore Schiazza, former Athletic Director and current Moderator of the Alumni Association of Cardinal Spellman High School. This year’s recipients were Owen Fetiza, Alexis Beverly, Robert Dziedzic, and Foday Koroma. Scholar-Athletes, recognized for their excellence in both athletics and academics, were presented with a special trophy. This year’s Scholar-Athlete Awards were given to Shanna Bhagan and Kamal Williams. Trophies for the male and female Athlete of the Year were presented to Christopher Manhertz and Monica Muffoletto.
