Listed below are the basic criteria that should be met by each applicant. All Juniors and Seniors that believe that they meet these requirements are encouraged to obtain an application from Ms. Keane or download a copy (below the page), complete it, and return it by the designated date. If you are admitted into the National Honor Society, you will be required to complete at least 90 minutes of tutoring service weekly. You will also have to maintain academics, extracurricular activities, and volunteer service during your period as a Society member. Any violation of the National Honor Society contract that you will receive upon admittance will result in termination of your membership. -- Basic National Honor Society Candidate Criteria The Categories1. Character - The applicant must be recommended by 4 faculty members that he or she is well acquainted with. · Involvement in any incidence of plagiarism, cheating on tests or homework, or any other dishonest act will automatically exclude that student from making an application to the National Honor Society. 2. Scholarship - The applicant must demonstrate academic achievement as recognized by school honors. · First honors in a given semester are worth two points; second honors are worth one point. Juniors applying for membership must have accumulated eight points; seniors, nine points. 3. Leadership - The applicant must show evidence of leadership in school and/or community activities (for example: positions as President, Secretary, Captain, etc…). · Moderators and other adults with whom the applicant has worked or is working with provide this evidence. 4. Service - The applicant must also show evidence of active participation in school and/or community activities. · Volunteer hours at churches, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, or other places where help was voluntary count as service. -- The CommitteeA committee of 7-8 members of the faculty will examine each student’s application. Names on the applications are kept hidden to ensure the committee’s impartiality. All decisions are final. The Moderator Ms. Truanne Keane has worked at Cardinal Spellman for several years. Aside from teaching chemistry, she has also led Cardinal Spellman’s Sequere Deum chapter of the National Honor Society during her tenure.
